Focus on Ignatia

Named for the patron saint of spiritual retreats and exercises, the Ignatia tree supplies us with the emotionally and physically supportive St. Ignatius bean. In homeopathic form, Ignatia treats a wide range of symptoms that can be caused by emotional turbulence. Loss of a loved one, trauma (even in the not so recent past), homesickness, broken hearts of all shapes and sizes, long, intense study periods and constant stress are all factors contributing to grief or insomnia. In short, Ignatia can help stabilize any strong emotions that if repressed, can set off a wide array of symptoms in the body.

A Homeopath and her Global Practice - An Interview with Ingrid Bekhor

Ingrid Bekhor always thought that if she knew enough homeopathy she would have a large practice. What she didn't anticipate, was that "large" in her case meant across continents. Ingrid Bekhor might best be described as a global homeopath. For the past 20 years she has pursued both the study and practice of homeopathy. Her passion is obvious as she recounts her story of first finding, and then following, what has emerged as her mission in life.

Dr. Stephen Messer - An Inspired Teacher of Homeopathy

Who would have believed in the 1970's that the future of naturopathy and homeopathy could seriously rest on the shoulders of a bunch of long haired hippies? That they would rise to the challenge and give back to the professions the credibility they deserved? Dr. Stephen Messer was a part of that movement and today is carrying the torch of that legacy, preparing the next generation of practitioners, so that the "dark ages" of naturopathy remain as history.

Treating Swimmer's Ear At Home Is Easy!

When swimmers come across the itchy, annoying and painful symptoms of swimmer's ear, it can result in a trip to the doctor's office for a round of prescription antibiotics and painkillers. But what people don't know is that many of these doctor's visits don't have to be the first line of treatment! According to the Mayo Clinic (provide link address), self-care steps can be used to treat most cases of swimmer's ear without the use of prescriptions or costly visits to your local doctor's office - good news for those of us who are uninsured or have more important things to do than spend unnecessary time and money at the clinic.

Keynote Homeopath: Thinking Positively with Dr. David Wember

Dr. David Wember uses more than mere medicine in his practice, he uses intention. "Between the healer and the patient, it is the intention that counts," he says. Of course, sometimes the mind needs a little nudge, and homeopathy is his way of helping it along the desired path. "Homeopathy is only one way; it has to be health with a sense of love. If you have that communion with a patient, they are going to get better," says the 68year-old physician who has been practicing for over 30 years.

Spring is almost here and so most definitely is the flu. Influenza cases continue to increase. As mentioned in the previous installment, the strain of influenza that is causing most of the infections this year, the Brisbane strain, was not included in the flu vaccine. Therefore, patients who chose to get the flu shot are getting sick this season. Click the title to read the full update.

Flu Guide - February 15-29, 2008

Flu is now widespread throughout the United States. The CDC reports that influenza is widespread now in all states with the exception of Florida. What is also being reported by the CDC is that this year's vaccine may be effective only 40% of the time. It seems that when the vaccine was formulated last spring, the strain that is currently causing most of the problem was left out of the vaccine. The so-called Brisbane or H3N2 strain was not included in the mix.

The number of influenza cases continues to increase and Eupatorium is clearly the epidemicus remedy.
Stress Concerns and Homeopathy

As a topic in patient interviews, life's stresses and stress responses bring many important insights to the surface, yet the term itself leads to a quagmire of options when trying to repertorize the case for a homeopathic remedy. The term "stress" has become an umbrella for a collection of mental, emotional and even physical issues. While 'Stress' will not be found in the classic repertories, practically all its side effects will be. Selecting a few of these most pertinent to stressful lifestyles and emotional pressures provides sufficient fodder for endless discussions and useful lists of applicable remedies.

Flu Guide - January 1-15, 2008

Seems like we are starting the New Year without very much influenza around. However, we do have a change in the epidemicus remedy. Many patients are coming down with a viral tracheitis. The trachea gets inflamed and results in a concussive, spasmodic, tickling cough. The cough doesn't produce much in the way of mucus and the little that is produced is pale yellow, gelatinous and difficult to raise. Patients are eating and drinking more but not because they have the sensation of hunger, rather eating and drinking anything seems to provide some temporary relief from the cough. Talking and deep inspiration increases the tickle and hence the cough. The cough may be accompanied by some epistaxis, however, the expectoration is not blood streaked or speckled. There may be a metallic or bitter taste in the mouth even when the cough is non-productive. On physical exam the throat appears normal and the lungs are clear. Short of performing laryngoscopy or tracehoscopy, there isn't much to see. Patients are usually afebrile and a bit tired. Some have had this cough for several weeks now. The epidemicus remedy for this cough is Phosphorus.

We are not yet into flu season and the only major condition that's out there currently is the Kali Bichromicum upper respiratory infection. The key is that no matter how it starts in the individual patient - pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis or even vertigo, somewhere along the course of treatment, Kali Bichromicum will be needed.

The Treatment of Coughs with Homeopathy

A review of homeopathic remedies for dry coughs, productive coughs and spasmodic coughs.
An Interview with Dr. Pam Taylor

As we follow Dr. Pam Taylor through her global travels, marriages, and extraordinary coincidences, we see her being led into natural medicine to save herself and those around her. Her mission: "the alleviation of pain and suffering" has brought her to the roots of humanity and early forms of Pure Nature Cure. She has compiled the wisdom accumulated from the influence of her father, a holistic dentist as well as from her own experience and that of naturopathic pioneers in her new book: "Simple Ways of Healing" (due to be published in late November). From her studies in medical anthropology, aromatherapy, and work with clay as an accomplished potter - she has developed an ability to have exquisite rapport with her patients. They feel very safe with Dr. Taylor as their advocate, protector and guide. She uses simple effective ways to bring them back home... to themselves. In Alaska and Guatemala she has had wonderful success teaching others to help their own families; this was the genesis for her book. A handbook we should all have within easy reach.>

Homeopathy for Women's Health

by Dr. Trevor Holly Cates: Being a woman is full of wonderful advantages such as the ability to bring a new life into the world and nurture a child through breastfeeding. Along with the joys of growing up as a woman come the sometimes difficult symptoms and conditions associated with hormonal development - from PMS and menstrual cramps to morning sickness and then, later, hot flashes. Fortunately, homeopathy provides relief for many of women's common health concerns. Constitutional homeopathic remedies are an excellent approach, but acutely prescribed homeopathic remedies often provide relief and can be tried first.
