The signs of the end of summer surround us: vacations draw to an end, the frenzied school supply shopping, and the filling of the work agenda.  It calls for an adjustment of our pace from the lazier days of summer.

September brings about an increase in activity associated with this “back to school” or “back to work” time of year which can often increase the level of anxiety and stress for all, including practitioners, working patients, and children getting back into their school routines.

Bach flower remedies often come to mind when there are emotional symptoms, and offer one treatment approach for stress and anxiety.   The following double-blind study has shown the effectiveness of Bach Rescue Remedy in the reduction of acute situational stress.

A double-blind clinical trial, conducted by R. Halberstein et al, compared a standard dosage of Bach Rescue Remedy to a placebo of identical appearance.  Rescue Remedy is a mix of the remedies created by Dr. Bach to address stressful situations, comprising of Star of Bethlehem, Rock Rose, Cherry Plum, Impatiens, and Clematis.  A group of 111 individuals, aged 18 to 49 patients, were randomized to either the treatment group (n = 53) or placebo (n = 58).  The Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was administered before and after the use of Rescue Remedy or placebo. Downward trends in anxiety level measurements were discovered in both the Rescue Remedy group and placebo groups, however, the reduction was statistically significant in only the Rescue Remedy group, demonstrating a significant reduction in the high-state anxiety treatment group.  The results suggested that Bach Rescue Remedy may be effective in reducing high levels of situational anxiety.
